About
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is one of the world’s most respected independent research institutions, founded in 1960 by Dr. Jonas Salk — the scientist who developed the polio vaccine. Located in La Jolla, California, the institute sits at the intersection of fundamental biology and translational medicine.
The Salk Institute has a deep history in peptide science, including the discovery of somatostatin — a peptide now widely used in treatments for neuroendocrine tumors and acromegaly. Current research continues to push the frontier of peptide biology: Dr. Alan Saghatelian’s lab has identified novel human peptide-producing genes linked to DNA repair and cancer biology, while other groups have published landmark 2025–2026 research on GLP-1 peptide mechanisms in the brain and peripheral nervous system.
Unlike clinical organizations, the Salk Institute operates as a pure research institution. Its discoveries have laid the scientific groundwork for therapeutic peptides that are now standard of care in metabolic disease, oncology, and beyond.
